Irrigation booms

A rain wing is a mobile irrigation structure, usually constructed of galvanized steel, designed to distribute water evenly over large agricultural areas. It is an extremely efficient solution for low-pressure irrigation, used in conjunction with self-propelled systems such as the rotary hose.

Why choose a rainwater wing: main advantages

The use of a rainwater wing for rollers or mobile and semi-permanent systems offers numerous benefits:

  • Uniformity of irrigation: thanks to the calibrated holes, water is evenly distributed over the entire surface area, avoiding stagnation and waste.
  • Ease of installation: light, flexible and easy to handle. It is also ideal for small plots of land.
  • Compatibility with different types of soil: the rainwater wing also adapts well to sandy and clayey soils, as long as the correct flow rate and hole spacing parameters are chosen.
  • Cost-effectiveness: it is one of the most advantageous solutions in terms of value for money, especially considering the low operating and maintenance costs.
  • Water efficiency: it minimises evaporation and erosion, especially when used during the cool hours of the day.

How to choose the size and characteristics of the rainwater wing according to the terrain

The choice of the most suitable rainwater wing depends largely on the characteristics of the soil on which it is to be installed.

  • In sandy soils, water tends to infiltrate very quickly due to the porous structure and poor cohesion between the particles. For this reason, it is important to use rainwater wings that ensure a close and regular distribution, with more dense jets and low flow rates. This prevents the water from penetrating too deeply and not being absorbed effectively by the roots.
  • Loamy soils have a finer grain size than sandy soils and a good capacity to retain moisture. However, they are also more sensitive to compaction. Here, you can opt for wings with an intermediate distance between jets, maintaining a flow rate that allows even wetting without generating stagnation. The aim is to encourage regular water penetration without saturating the soil.
  • Clay soils are very compact and retain water longer. They have a low drainage capacity, so it is necessary to adopt rainwater wings with more spaced sprays and reduced flow rates to avoid water accumulation on the surface and consequent problems of root asphyxia. It is essential to maintain a balance so as not to overload the soil.

In addition to the type of soil, the slope of the field also plays an important role in the choice of wing. In the presence of uneven terrain, water naturally tends to flow downwards, causing uneven distribution. To solve this problem, it is advisable to use rain wings equipped with self-compensating systems, which regulate the pressure along the entire length of the structure, guaranteeing an even distribution even with significant slopes.

A further factor to consider is the type of crop. Horticultural or short-cycle crops, which require frequent but not excessively abundant irrigation, are well suited to lighter and more flexible solutions, even in terms of flow rate. On the contrary, crops such as maize, forage or orchards in the start-up phase have higher water requirements: in these cases it is preferable to opt for wings with wider sprays and higher flow rates, capable of covering larger areas in less time.

Finally, it is essential to assess the compatibility of the rainwater wing with existing systems. The diameter of the pipe, the length of the wing and the operating pressure must be compatible with the drum and pump in use, to ensure smooth and safe operation of the entire system.

We directly construct rainwater wings for every type of soil and crop. Each project is developed with the support of experienced technicians to ensure efficiency and durability of the system.
